Support for Family and Friends Affected by Addiction
Support for family and friends affected by addiction is at the heart of Northstar Family Support Project’s work. Supporting someone who misuses drugs or alcohol can be all-consuming and emotionally draining. It’s easy to lose your identity and self-worth along the way without realising what’s happening to you. If your partner, child, sibling, parent or close friend is struggling with drug or alcohol misuse, you may be feeling overwhelmed, isolated or unsure where to turn. Northstar Family Support Project provides free, confidential support for families and loved ones affected by addiction across Limerick and surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Northstar Family Support Project provides support to families and loved ones affected by someone else's drug or alcohol misuse. We do not provide treatment or support services for individuals experiencing addiction themselves.
How do I know if this service is right for me?
If someone else's drug or alcohol use is affecting your life, you don't have to face it alone. We support parents, partners, siblings, grandparents, friends and other loved ones.
Does my loved one need to be receiving treatment?
No. You can access our support whether or not your loved one is engaging with treatment or recovery services.
Is your support confidential?
Yes. We provide a confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about your experiences.
Is there a cost for the service?
No. All of our family support services are provided free of charge. If you have any questions about accessing support, our team will be happy to talk you through the process.
Is this support available for the person experiencing addiction?
Our service is specifically for family members, partners and loved ones who are affected by someone else's drug or alcohol use. If you are looking for support with your own substance use, we can help point you towards organisations and services that are better suited to your needs.
Who can access your support?
Our service is available to anyone aged 18 or over who is affected by someone else's drug or alcohol use. Whether that person is a partner, parent, child, sibling, other family member or close friend, you are welcome to contact us if their substance use is having a negative impact on your life.
How do I get started?
Contact our team by phone, email or through our referral form. We'll explain the next steps and answer any questions you have.
We’re Here When You’re Ready
We understand that reaching out can feel difficult, and it’s completely okay to take your time. We’ll be here whenever you feel ready.
In the meantime, you may find it helpful to learn more about substance misuse. Understanding more about what your loved one may be experiencing can sometimes help reduce stress and bring a bit more clarity during a challenging time.
You don’t have to face things alone – support will be here when you need it.
TESTIMONIALS
Testimonials
“After my initial disappointment on finding out that they would not be fixing my son, they offered me the opportunity to learn how I could build my resilience, so that my son’s addiction does not bring me to my knees ever again. I had support. I was no longer trying to do this on my own.”
“A lifeline for families with their loved ones in addiction. Nothing in the world can take away the pain of addiction in a family but the Northstar opens up a quiet door for you to be able to cope with it. Each member of the family is welcome. The staff provide you with the tools to be able to get out of bed each day and cope.”
“I know now what worked and why. I have become a lot stronger and clearer about what I accept and don’t accept. About saying no, and creating boundaries for myself when dealing with the chaos and the challenges.”
